Forgiveness is powerful

Forgiveness is powerful
If you are struggling with unforgivingness, remind yourself of how God has forgiven you, and respond in kind. Well, David should know: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will He keep His anger forever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:8-12).

Rescuers and army workers search in rubble in Juchitan

“At least 90 people have died in Thursday’s 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico, officials have confirmed. A government spokesman said 71 people had been killed in the south-west state of Oaxaca alone. Hundreds of families have reportedly been camping in the streets, afraid of the dangers of aftershocks. The Mexican Seismological Service said 721 had been recorded since the initial tremor.”

“GET READY, is the word sounded in my ears. GET READY, GET READY. He that is to come, will come and will not tarry. Tell my people that unless they improve the sacred opportunities given them, unless they do the work I have given them, Satan will come upon them with the stealthy tread of a thief, to deceive and allure them.” God wants us to be wide awake, that when He shall come, we shall be ready to say, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us.” He is coming to us by His Holy Spirit today. Let us recognize Him now; then we shall recognize Him when He comes in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. God calls upon you to get ready to meet Him in peace.” (E.White, Review and Herald, April 30, 1901)

Andrew Garfield, the actor who played Desmond Doss in the movie Hacksaw Ridge, had an experience with ‘Christ’ while preparing for another movie about a 17th century Jesuit priest

Garfield studied for a year with Jesuit priest James Martin in preparation for the aforementioned movie about Jesuits.  During that year, he studied (and learned) the Ignatian Spiritual exercises–the ‘holy grail’ of spiritual formation.  Garfield said that Martin helped him better grasp who God is.

“He gave me spiritual direction as if I were a Jesuit in training,” he said. “It became a very personal journey for me.”

“It is a transformational meditative process where you do these imaginative prayers” said Garfield.  “In fact”, he continued, “Stanislavski, who invented the basis for modern acting, was deeply inspired by Saint Ignatius’ spiritual exercises.  So I felt right at home as an actor.  It was this very weird thing where you create this deep relationship with Jesus Christ”  he stated in an interview.

“I hadn’t studied the Bible, being an agnostic pantheist, and I discovered that the Jesuits are incredibly pantheistic in a way.  They find God in all things.  God is in the tree that was used to make this table, and I think that is a wonderful way to see the world.”

The highlight of Garfield’s Ignatian experience was a week of silence.

“The week was full of meditation in and attempt to get close to those deep inner voices and the spiritual exploration we were doing.  After the seven days, I was traveling to the airport with another actor and the devil showed up in a disgusting, dark conversation between us for three hours.  It was like the devil came in and made us say these nasty words, I can’t even remember the words, they are like, blocked out of my memory.”

Wow.  This experience has become Garfield’s experiential replacement for the Bible.  It has brought moments where the Enemy took control of his thoughts and speech, and yet convinced him that he has found the true Jesus.

These spiritual formation exercises are flowing rapidly through their latest vehicle, the Emergent Church movement, and have positively affected not a few Adventists, who claim that they (Ignatian Spiritual exercises) might be a good way to get closer to God, or Jesus Christ.  But which Jesus?  There are lots of false Jesus’ and only one real One.  There are many spirits and one Holy Spirit, in our heightened spiritual culture.  We must be wise, and test the spirits by the Word of God.  There is much deception around us.

Andrew Garfield final words:  “My philosophy is that a life of faith is not a life of certainty; a life of faith is a life of doubt.”  Huh? In Colossians 2:8 it reads  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Desmond Doss’ life exemplified biblical conviction, and to be portrayed by an actor who says these things should remind us anew that Hollywood is no friend of truth.  Now you know the rest of the story, and knowing it, you might say a prayer for this poor deceived man, Andrew Garfield.  There might be more hope for him than for Christians who go down this dark path.  In fact, our culture is not moving from Christian to secular; it is moving from secular to pagan.

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.  He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him.  By this we know that we are in Him” (1 John 2:3-6).

What about Eating Just a Little Meat?

It has long been known that a plant-based diet may be protective against diabetes. Studies have shown over and over again that those who eat meat one or more days a week had significantly higher rates of diabetes, and the more frequently they ate meat, the more frequent the disease. And also those who ate plant-based food had only a fraction of the diabetes even though they lived a lot longer (and therefore had more time to develop diabetes) than those who ate meat.

Today, as the Adventist-2 health study’s 89,000 participants show, there is a step by step drop in rates of diabetes as one eats more and more plant-based food down to a 78% lower prevalence of the disease. The protection builds incrementally as one’s diet of daily meat eating migrates to eating meat weekly, to just fish, to no meat, and then to no eggs and dairy either. A plant-based diet has the potential to stem the current diabetes epidemic.

The same is true for high blood pressure and excess body fat. The greater the proportion of plant foods, the lower the rates of hypertension and excess body fat. In fact, the only group that was not overweight, on average, were those eating exclusively plant-based.

But what about eating a really healthy diet with just a little meat? A study of Asians in Taiwan compared Buddhist vegetarians to Buddhist non-vegetarians, eating traditional Asian food. Even the omnivores were eating predominately plant-based diet, with only a little meat and fish – 3-8% of their Western counterparts.

Those men who ate vegetarian had half the incidence of diabetes and the women only had a quarter of the rates of their meat-eating Buddhist compatriots. They wanted to break up their study to look at ovo-lacto and vegan participants like what was done in the Adventist-2 study, but they couldn’t because they had no incidence of diabetes among the vegan group.

The Adventist-2 study is important because it’s not only the biggest study of those eating plant-based diets in North America, but the largest such study anywhere anytime.

So, eat plants, not animals. You’ll have the longest life-span and the best quality of life.

“Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.” Ministry of Healing, page 296
