Megachurch High · September 03, 2012

A University of Washington study suggests that “worship services at megachurches can trigger feelings of transcendence and changes in brain chemistry that creates a spiritual “high” that keeps members coming back for more.”

The brain chemical is “oxytocin,” which creates euphoria and joy and acts like a drug. The study “God is like a drug: Explaining Interaction Ritual Chains in American Megachurches” suggests that “large gatherings of shared experience like concerts and sporting events triggers feelings of euphoria. Researchers call it an “oxytocin cocktail” of shared transcendent experience. In the presence of large and emotional social gathering, the brain releases oxytocin creating transcendent feelings which are perceived as coming from God or the divine.

“One congregant reported, ‘God’s love becomes … such a drug that you can’t wait to come get your next hit… You can’t wait to get involved to get the high from God.’”

“Another said ‘you can look up to the balcony and see the Holy Spirit go over the crowd like a wave in a football game…’”

The style of worship is what creates the “high.” Use of technology and appeals to emotion create the shared experience leading to the mass euphoria. Megachurches use upbeat modern music, cameras and screens to project people smiling, crying, dancing, etc., on large screens, and an emotional charismatic preacher to create the environment for a strongly emotional experience.

“The pastor functions as an ‘energy star’ who engages the congregation through an accessible, informal and emotional sermon. Rather than being analytical or theological, the message ‘just feels right’ or ‘just makes sense’ for congregants…”

“To extend the spiritual high beyond Sunday, churches feature small group activities such as Bible study, book clubs, and volunteer activities, the researchers said. But it is Sunday worship that brings people back.”

Being addicted to church is not new. But now the mechanism for the addiction is better understood. Satan knows the human system very well. He knows that by creating mass hysteria or hypnosis, we can control large crowds and keep them addicted to a superficial message. Will megachurches become a tool to oppose God’s last warning message and through manipulation and emotional addiction prevent the masses from accepting the deeper truths for the last days?

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

2 Corinthians 10:5 (King James Version)

“The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit.”

“The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifying truth for this time. Better never have the worship of God blended with music than to use musical instruments to do the work which last January was represented to me would be brought into our camp meetings. The truth for this time needs nothing of this kind in its work of converting souls. A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din and noise, to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit’s working.” Selected Messages, Vol. 2, page 36

Every marriage must rely on trust – and likewise in our union with Christ, we must remain faithful to Him and His Word. Revelation speaks about the true bride of Christ, but there is another woman who is trying to seduce believers away from God’s Word. Revelation contains a shocking message about Babylon, the other woman. Babylon is fallen, and Christ’s people must escape her charms or perish! Th…

The Bible says there is but one body, or church, into which Jesus calls His end-time people – the bride of Christ. To some, this is unnerving, as there are thousands of different churches today that call themselves Christian. Virtually every one claims to be God’s church, yet they each differ widely in biblical interpretation, faith, and practice. It’s quite impossible for the honest seeker of …
