Appeals to religious liberty have become more than an occasional isolated comment from higher levels of administration of the Roman Catholic Church in recent months. They are clearly a trend.

—Vatican City, Jan 19, 2012 / 12:00 pm. – Pope Benedict XVI warned today of a ‘grave threat’ to religious liberty in the United States . . .”

—“Meanwhile, other bishops raised the ‘worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship” without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience.’”

—“Religious liberty is under attack, both at home and abroad,” the American bishops said in a new document titled “Our first, most cherished freedom.”

—“The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a 12-page pastoral letter on religious freedom . . . the right to religious freedom is a litmus test for the respect of all other rights, the bishops said.”

—Archbishop Francis A. Chullikatt . . . delivered the keynote address at the eighth annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. . . . “Faith in God and respect for religious freedom go hand in hand,” he said. “The one who respects the existence of God will always and everywhere respect also religious freedom.”

In its ongoing efforts to sanitize its historical image, the Catholic Church has recently seen an opportunity to present itself to the world as a major champion of religious liberty.

—April 16, 2012 – “The Roman Catholic Church announced a major campaign Thursday aimed at bringing attention to what it said were growing threats to religious liberty in the United States.” . . . Sister Mary Ann Walsh, the communications director for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said, “It’s going to be extensive and it’s going to be occurring over a few years.”

Such a campaign joins forces with the centuries-long effort of Catholicism to undo the effects of the Protestant Reformation and bring all of “Christendom” under its influence. It comes at a time when even the most secure strongholds of Protestantism have shown signs of wavering in their commitment to the principles of that Reformation. Roman Catholicism is increasingly looked at with favor by many who have long opposed its principles.

Lest we forget, one of the most brutal, lengthy, and systematic violations of religious liberty and human rights known to history is the period of the Roman Catholic Inquisition. Millions were executed for their religious convictions and their properties confiscated by the church. And the Roman Catholic Church continues to maintain that it does not change in its core doctrines, one of which is its right to persecute heresy.

Roman Catholicism is only one of several agencies jockeying for the ultimate prize of world domination. At the moment it is being strongly challenged by the ideology of socialism/communism and is using the cry of religious liberty to avoid losing influence in critical areas of the world. We must not forget the prediction of Revelation chapter 13 that the persecutions of the past will appear again in the future once Catholicism (the leopard-like beast) has regained its position of dominance in world affairs.

“God’s word has given warning of the impending danger; let this be unheeded, and the Protestant world will learn what the purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too late to escape the snare. She is silently growing into power. Her doctrines are exerting their influence in legislative halls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her lofty and massive structures in the secret recesses of which her former persecutions will be repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectedly she is strengthening her forces to further her own ends when the time shall come for her to strike. All that she desires is vantage ground, and this is already being given her. We shall soon see and shall feel what the purpose of the Roman element is. Whoever shall believe and obey the word of God will thereby incur reproach and persecution.” — The Great Controversy, page 581
